Neighbors Sue to Halt Massive FDR Park Renovation

Can 11 South Philadelphians halt FDR Park’s $250 million renovation project? Maybe. According to a report by Ximena Conde in the Inquirera group is suing to pull the brakes on the project, which is already underway, arguing that it needs the approval of both City Council and Orphans’ Court (which is not a powerful judicial body composed entirely of Dickensian waifs, sadly).

The suit, filed on Monday, further argues that the plan (which you can read about here) endangers the park’s wetlands and natural beauty. To quote:

Exploring the Progressive Field renovations

Posted on 06/05/2025

CLEVELAND — Here’s a fact that will blow the minds of many who remember so well how it felt to first walk into the ballpark at Carnegie and Ontario and, after all those years in dank and dreary Municipal Stadium, finally bask in the brilliance of a modern Major League facility:

Progressive Field is now the 10th-oldest ballpark in MLB.

At 30 years old, Progressive has peers that have already been replaced. Two other parks the same age or younger — the Ballpark in Arlington (later known as Globe Life Park), which opened in 1994, and Atlanta’s Turner Field, which opened in 1997 — were both abandoned by their ball clubs, a telling tale of how rapidly the fall from grace can come for a sports facility.

Replacing Progressive Field, however, is unthinkable. Beyond the obvious financial ramifications of such an idea, this ballpark means too much to too much. In the mid-1990s, it was at the forefront of a renaissance for both a town and a team, and it has accommodated so many crazy comebacks and indelible images that it is inextricably linked to this club’s identity.

Yet because times and tastes do evolve quite a bit in 30

HLGU renovating, reopening historic dorms for anticipated rise in enrollment | News

Posted on 05/05/2025

HANNIBAL — Two of Hannibal-LaGrange University’s historic dorms are being renovated and will reopen for the 2024-25 school year for an anticipated rise in enrollment.

Pullium Hall, built in 1929, is one of three original buildings on the university’s campus. Crouch Hall was added in 1956. Both dorms were closed in 2019 due to declining enrollment.

However, the last two years HLGU has seen more students coming to campus.

“This year, we had 129 new students,” said Robert Matz, president of Hannibal-LaGrange University. “I would anticipate this coming year, it’ll be closer to 155 to 160 new students due to the number of students we’ve Had deposit, so put money down to say they’re coming to Hannibal-LaGrange.”

Pullium Hall and Crouch Hall were the chosen dorms to renovate due to being the most ready to work on. Matz hopes to work on more buildings in the future, especially dorms as the needs arise.

While an increase in enrollment was a big push to renovate the dorms another aspect was an organization called Campers on Mission, an organization associated with the Missouri Baptist Organization.

“These are high skilled individuals, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, general contractors, all kinds of folks in those kinds

5 ways the Hellems renovation is reducing the building’s environmental impact | CU Boulder Today

Posted on 28/03/2025

Published: March 26, 2024

The Hellems Arts and Sciences building renovation is ongoing, and the project includes multiple aspects designed to reduce the building’s environmental impact:

  • The Energy Use Intensity (EUI), or the amount of energy used in a building per square foot annually, in Hellems is projected to decrease by 68% even with the addition of air conditioning.

  • The building will have a new high-efficiency mechanical system designed to accommodate the campus’s future conversion to a low-temperature hot-water heating system.

  • Increased thermal performance: The building will have triple-pane high-efficiency windows, increased insulation in the walls and roof and local, LEED-certified materials.

  • Sustainability consultants performed daylight studies to maximize access to natural light.

  • Another benefit of the renovation is the reduction of embodied carbon due to building and material reuse. For example, the existing terrazzo and wood flooring are being refurbished and reused, and wood transoms are being salvaged and integrated into the finishes of the office wing.

Hellems is expected to reopen in winter 2025–26. Learn more about the renovation project.

Concerns over former St. Pierre Renovation Center

Posted on 26/03/2025

You can’t miss the mess on Exeter Road.

Recently a chorus of complaints has grown louder about the state of the former St. Pierre Renovation Center at 595 Exeter Rd. in London.

Smashed windows, broken doors, and wide open shipping bays have allowed a steady flow of trespassers into the building.

“Over the last month, maybe two months, there’s been a lot of homeless people or younger kids going in there breaking the windows and causing fires,” said Courtney Loucks, whose home overlooks the site.

The property around the building has become littered with large piles of construction debris and furniture.

The building at 595 Exeter Rd. and the adjacent Shamrock Industrial Park have a long and complex history with the City of London.

A staff report from 2015 speaks to efforts by owner Samuel John Shirley to clean up soil contamination and address unpaid taxes.

However, Shirley died in 2020 and according to his son, John Shirley Jr., the property remains part of the estate.

Shirley Jr. told CTV News that he is boarding up the windows and doors to prevent trespassing, but expects people will just break through the plywood.

He is also cleaning up this site but
