One Architect Shows Sustainable Home Renovation Is Possible in Brooklyn

Posted on 30/04/2025

When Aaron and Anna Schiller began thinking about building a new home in Brooklyn where they could start a family, Mr. Schiller knew he could use his training as an architect to his advantage.

It was 2017, and housing prices were already soaring. Mr Schiller, 39, the founder of the architecture firm Schiller Projects, assumed the couple would buy something “that was relatively unattractive to the rest of the market,” so they could get a good deal.

But he had another agenda.

“I was seeking an opportunity to do something I couldn’t find a client to do at that point in time,” he said, “which was to attempt to build, in timber, a near-zero carbon piece of construction.”

specifically, Mr. Schiller was interested in mass timber construction, which uses engineered wood for structural components — rather than steel or concrete, which are responsible for significant greenhouse-gas emissions.

It took about a year for Mr. Schiller to find his “unattractive” building: an 1870s brick carriage house in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, that was being used as a limousine garage and apartment.

From the street, the structure was quite handsome. The problems were inside: The rooms were dark and dank, the space was

Warm Welcome – Kitchen & Bath Design News

Posted on 29/04/2025

The bathroom, especially the master bath, is a place where designers can help homeowners create the personal refuge they crave. With the right sinks and faucets, designers can add a personal touch without hijacking the overall design of the space. A range of materials and finishes tailored to individual tastes helps them create just the right combination for each homeowner.

“In general, homeowners want to showcase their personal style throughout every aspect of their home, which means bath products that are customizable will be trending in 2023 and likely into the future,” says Justin Storm, group product manager for House of Rohl based in Irvine, CA. “Overall design trends pave the way for sink and faucet trends as homeowners look to create a cohesive bathroom environment that suits their personal style.”

“With wellness being top-of-mind, we are still seeing a desire for creating an oasis in the bathroom – a place to escape the daily grind,” reports Mandy Ellington, director, Brizo brand management at Brizo Kitchen and Bath in Indianapolis, IN. “People are willing to take more risks when it comes to design choices, while simultaneously and intentionally creating a uniquely crafted bathroom experience.”

Interior Design Trends 2023: Experts Share What’s in This Year

Posted on 28/04/2025

At first, “interior design trends” can feel like an oxymoronic term. Decor doesn’t tend to undergo seasonal changes or flash-in-the-pan fads—furniture, textiles, art, and wall coverings are too cumbersome, too expensive, too enduring to update frequently. When you design a room, as the saying goes, you need to learn to live with it. For a long time.

Yet the pendulum does swing, albeit over years and decades: 1970s shag-carpeted bohemianism gives way to 1980s glitzy excess, which gives way to 1990s palate-cleansing minimalism. So, as we enter 2023—and find interior solutions that are kind to both our sanity and the planet feels more important than ever—a sense of permanence is key to understanding which way the 2020s are heading. What will feel timeless or au courant for several years to come, and what is on its way to feeling dated?

Vogue decided to ask 13 interior designers to find out.

For starters: earth tones—which, due to their calming effects and associations with nature, increased in popularity during the pandemic years—still rule three years in. Shades of brown continue their decor dominance, while romantic mauve, Kathryn M. Ireland and Jake Arnold predict, is the color of the year to come. Meanwhile,

Home Depot’s Q1 lackluster shows that remodeling boom is over

Posted on 27/04/2025

Interest in big home improvement projects is waning. That’s one takeaway from Home Depot’s uninspired first-quarter results.

“The size of the projects are getting a bit smaller,” Home Depot (HD) CEO Ted Decker told analysts on the company’s first quarter earnings call Monday.

“It could be that project [are] being deferred or it could be that the project is being broken up into chunks,” Decker said. “Rather than doing an entire room or an entire basement, you start working it in smaller chunks and that clearly impacts items per basket in overall activity. “

On a yearly basis, customer transactions slid 4.8%, but came in better than Wall Street’s call for a 5.36% drop. Customers also spent less per ticket than anticipated, recording a 0.2% gain against expectations of a 2.63% boost in average ticket sizes.

Big-ticket transactions, or those over $1,000, were down 6.5% compared with the first quarter of last year. Customers also shied away from flooring, kitchen, and bath during the quarter, another potential signal that they are downsizing projects.

DIY customers also outperformed the professional sector as demand shifted toward smaller projects, Home Depot said.

That jibes with other research on remodeling.

Renovations turn up mortar shell in NSW house, but Australian Defense Force X-ray shows no active fuse

Posted on 26/04/2025

Weekend home renovations came to an alarming halt for a resident on the New South Wales South Coast after he discovered a 30-centimetre-long mortar shell.

Key points:

  • A Bulli resident says he was an element of what to do after finding the bomb
  • A Police Bomb Squad, Fire and Rescue and the Australian Defense Force blocked off the street to investigate
  • The mortar was deemed safe to transport

Plumber Elliott Doughty moved into his new home in Bulli last month and was digging underneath a concrete slab in his backyard on Sunday afternoon when his shovel hit something unexpected.

“I didn’t know it was a bomb at first, but I hit pretty hard,” Mr Doughty said.

“Nothing happened — thank God — so I assumed it was safe to move out of the way.”

Intrigued by its torpedo-shaped appearance, Mr Doughty carried the mortar over to a nearby tap to rinse off the dirt.

The Best Small Bathroom Paint Colors

Posted on 24/04/2025

While functionality is the most important feature of any bathroom, with the right design elements, you can transform this room into a calming oasis. But if you’re working with limited square footage, your bathroom may feel cramped rather than relaxing. One way to make this space feel bigger is by choosing the right hue for your walls. Ahead, we’re sharing paint colors that experts say can make small bathrooms feel bigger.

Light Grey

If you’re worried about gray feeling too cold, don’t be—it can actually be a very warm and inviting hue when thoughtfully chosen. Opt for a light grey, as it’s neutral enough to create the illusion of light, which can make small bathrooms feel bigger, says Meg Piercy, the founder and owner of MegMade.

Blush Pink

Since the bathroom is such a small part of your home, it gives you the opportunity to get creative with color. If you want a subtle shade that’s far from boring, opt for blush pink. This colorful neutral is so versatile that you can pair it with essentially any other color, as you would with a true neutral, says Kathryn Emery, home improvement and lifestyle expert.
