Project Description

“We believe in an architecture of responsibility.” – Marc Thorpe

Marc Thorpe Design partners with Stage Six and Échale International to develop sustainable, ecologically responsible housing in Uganda, East Africa. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Uganda has a deficit of 2.1 million housing units, growing at a rate of 200,000 units a year. By 2030, the deficit is
expected to reach three million units.

The goal is to provide housing to middle to lower income families. Currently, there is extremely low supply of housing and it is usually of poor quality. Stage Six, Échale International and Marc Thorpe Design aim to relieve this pressure on the housing market and the people of Uganda.

The house is constructed using Echale International’s EcoBlock, compressed earth brick. The EcoBlock is produced from 90% local soil and 10% a mixture of cement, lime, sand and water. It is a thermal and acoustic insulator, ecologically sustainable, more resistant than cement block and 30% less CO2 production. The house is the first in a

Using texture in interior design – how the pros harness it

Posted on 31/08/2025

Texture in interior design is vital, and is, quite literally, woven into the fabric of a designer’s vocabulary and practice. Creating texture is not simply about how decor and soft furnishings feel, but it’s also about ‘visual texture’ – using different materials to add interest and breathe life into a room.

Quite simply, without texture, a space will fall flat. It’s crucial to look at the room as a whole and bring an area together with mixed materials for vibrancy and warmth. It’s a way of adding depth and dimension to a room as well as comfort.

What is texture in interior design?

Interior designers use texture in the form of tactile objects such as fabrics, wood and stone to add physical comfort and visual interest to a space. Mixing materials and layering is key to making textural elements work.

Tiffany Leigh, of Tiffany Leigh Design, explains: ‘Texture in interior design is all about creating tactile moments that invite touch. It refers to the feel, appearance or consistency of a surface or material. Textures help to keep a space from feeling flat or one dimensional.’

Four bedrooms… four bathrooms? How COVID-19 is changing home design

Posted on 28/08/2025

“The Barnaby” might be a strange name for a home of the future, but that’s what this four-bedroom demonstration house claims to be.

Located in a small town in North Carolina, it’s the size of an average new house in Australia and looks pretty normal from the outside.

Inside, the differences are obvious: a front-door “vestibule” for no-contact home delivery, two “pocket” home offices (neither of which is a bedroom), a school room, a quarantine room, a “secret room” behind a bookcase (for being alone), and a whopping four bathrooms.

In case you haven’t guessed it yet, this is a design shaped by the pandemic.

The team of architects, social researchers, and marketing experts who dreamed it up say every detail is informed by insights from a survey into the impact of the pandemic on homes and communities in the US.

What about in Australia? Here, the property industry is seeing demand for features like those of The Barnaby (though not four bathrooms).

The dedicated home office is king, and there’s generally greater appreciation for good design and quality of construction.

Inside a Minimalist Capsule Home Overlooking the British Coastline

Today Architectural Digest travels to the Isle of Wight on England’s south coast to tour Saltmarsh House, a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) House of the Year 2023 shortlisted project. Sitting on the edge of a vast tidal marsh, this stunning pavilion home, designed by architect Níall McLaughlin, floats above the ground on a lightweight steel frame. Truly ingenious is the property’s structure, which was prefabricated off-site and lifted into place to minimize disruption to the surrounding nature reserve. Offering uninterrupted views of the marshes and bay beyond, this impressive home is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature, proving they can coexist in harmony for generations to come. Pool and Patio Combos for Little Spaces

Posted on 04/07/2025

Having a small backyard does not necessarily mean you must forego your ambition to have both a pool and a patio. Creative planning can transform even small outside areas into a sophisticated and soothing haven. The most out of every inch may be accomplished by a well-designed pool and patio combination, which will also provide you with a fantastic spot for entertaining or unwinding. Some suggestions and ideas for designing the ideal small-space combination follow:

Select a Plunge or Tiny Swimming Pool

Limited area in little gardens calls for a small swimming pool. One outstanding alternative is a plunge pool. Not for swimming laps, these pools are meant for cooling off and leisure. Square, round, or rectangular, they can be molded into whatever you like; they also fit nicely into tight locations. Well-designed, even a little 8×10 or 12×16-foot pool may have a significant impact.

Use Multi-Functional Patio Features

Select patio furniture with multiple functions. Planters that can double as seats, tables with foldable legs, or benches with storage under are all options. Blending utility with aesthetics helps to maintain an open and clean area. Next to a little pool, a corner lounge or a small dining table suits very …

We tried ‘the AI interior designer.’ It has a lot to learn.

Posted on 11/05/2025

Whether it’s Microsoft’s chatbot going stalker-mode on unwitting tech columnists or ChatGPT doing schoolwork for sneaky kids, artificial intelligence is suddenly everywhere. So, of course there’s a company with a tool that claims to be “the AI interior designer.”

Fulhaus is based in Montreal, and for the last three years it has been developing artificial intelligence to help real estate investors efficiently furnish their properties. In March, that tool, named Ludwig, became available to everyone. The Fulhaus website describes it as “A new AI system that can create buyable furniture collections from any inspired image, just like an interior designer. Only faster.” Basically, you upload photos of decor that appeals to you and Ludwig is supposed to take it from there, generating a shopping list of furniture for your home that fits your style.

“The Computer Research Institute of Montreal helped us develop the initial blueprint and how we went about the blueprint, and then from there we started hiring the right developers and the right machine-learning engineers,” says Fulhaus CEO Andria Santos, of how Ludwig came to be.

I happened to be decorating a new home, so I figured I’d give Ludwig a try myself. I used the free

Interior Design Trends 2023: Experts Share What’s in This Year

Posted on 28/04/2025

At first, “interior design trends” can feel like an oxymoronic term. Decor doesn’t tend to undergo seasonal changes or flash-in-the-pan fads—furniture, textiles, art, and wall coverings are too cumbersome, too expensive, too enduring to update frequently. When you design a room, as the saying goes, you need to learn to live with it. For a long time.

Yet the pendulum does swing, albeit over years and decades: 1970s shag-carpeted bohemianism gives way to 1980s glitzy excess, which gives way to 1990s palate-cleansing minimalism. So, as we enter 2023—and find interior solutions that are kind to both our sanity and the planet feels more important than ever—a sense of permanence is key to understanding which way the 2020s are heading. What will feel timeless or au courant for several years to come, and what is on its way to feeling dated?

Vogue decided to ask 13 interior designers to find out.

For starters: earth tones—which, due to their calming effects and associations with nature, increased in popularity during the pandemic years—still rule three years in. Shades of brown continue their decor dominance, while romantic mauve, Kathryn M. Ireland and Jake Arnold predict, is the color of the year to come. Meanwhile,

July: Martian house | News and features

Posted on 22/04/2025

Space scientists from the University of Bristol have consulted on a pioneering public art project to build a ‘Martian House’ at Harborside – and now the people of Bristol are invited to create the interior.

The house has been designed to withstand the real environmental challenges faced on Mars and inspire ideas about how we can all live more sustainably.

The brainchild of local artists and Watershed Pervasive Media Studio residents, Ella Good and Nicki Kent, the Building a Martian House project brings together space scientists, architects, engineers, designers and the public, to explore how we live and to stimulate visions for new ways of living on Earth and on Mars.

As construction begins, applications are sought from members of the public who are interested to help create the interior of the house. No experience or prior knowledge is necessary! The interiors team will work alongside the artists to design and make prototype objects to go inside. Applications are via this form and close at midnight on 30th July 2022.

The University’s space and engineering experts, Professor Lucy Berthoud, Dr Bob Myhill and Professor James Norman, have advised the team on what inhospitable conditions and environmental challenges they could
